Washington Park Renovation

KLH designed the mechanical, electrical, plumbing and lighting systems for the $46.2 million renovation and expansion of Cincinnati’s Washington Park. The renovation—which expanded the park from five to eight acres—created a central gathering space directly across from Music Hall to be known as Music Hall Plaza. Pedestrian post-top lighting assemblies are located on the north and south edge of the Music Hall Plaza, where a temporary stage area is positioned. These lights are also used to light the paths to the park. This Music Hall Plaza now leads into the new civic lawn space and then into the park’s historic bandstand area.

The existing lighting in the historic bandstand was replaced and new uplights were installed in the wood ceiling. A light cable system suspended above the bandstand provides unique ambiance to this feature area. The bandstand’s permanent stage is illuminated via downlight cylinders at the trellis supports. Other enhancements included audio/visual upgrades and the addition of a dramatic new lighting canopy encompassing the area surrounding the bandstand.

This project is part of a public and private sector investment helping revitalize Cincinnati’s historic Over-the-Rhine neighborhood. Today, the park welcomes millions of visitors each year and hosts 500 events annually including live music, public markets, children’s activities and more.
