Xavier University Alter Hall

Alter Hall is a 50-year-old classroom building on the campus of Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. The renovation presented challenges due to the building’s age, with many of the building’s original systems still in place. Now, with highly efficient systems tied to the university’s central plant, the building systems can minimize energy consumption— one of the university’s primary goals— through building performance metrics and encouraging conservation. The MEP and technology systems alone covered 20% of the overall budget.

As the primary academic building on Xavier’s campus, Alter Hall holds core curriculum classes, as well as three honors programs and the dean’s offices for the College of Arts and Sciences. The four-story building includes a 300-seat lecture hall and 33 classrooms. All of the learning spaces were designed to accommodate a range of disciplines, curricula and training.
