Patrick Fernbach, PE, WELL AP, principal and director of mechanical engineering at Kohrs Lonnemann Heil Engineers (KLH Engineers), and Darion Ziegler, AIA, senior architect at Reztark Design Studio, will be presenting “New Refrigerants, New Requirements,” in a webinar hosted by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Cincinnati on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, at 12:00 p.m. EST.

In 2025, manufacturers must use low Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerants to meet U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requirements. This shift to more 2L rated refrigerants, which are more flammable, necessitates additional safety precautions during design, impacting both mechanical and architectural disciplines.

The webinar will provide an overview of the GWP requirements and the new safety measures due to increased flammability. Attendees will learn why these requirements are being implemented, who is setting the standards, and the environmental impact. The session will also cover changes to the International Mechanical Code and the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning EngineersĀ (ASHRAE) Standards to ensure the safe implementation of these new refrigerants.

Participants will gain insights into how the new refrigerants will affect equipment manufacturers, including impacts on maintenance, lead times and costs. Additionally, the webinar will discuss the importance of early coordination between architects and engineers to support the new refrigerants’ infrastructure.

The event is open to members for $10 and nonmembers for $25, with the opportunity to earn AIA continuing education credits.
