Holmes County Courthouse Clock Tower Lighting

A defining landmark in the heart of Millersburg, the historic Holmes County Courthouse clock tower called for a lighting solution that would honor its legacy while enhancing its presence after dark. Built in the late nineteenth century, the courthouse has been designated a historic site for its architectural significance. The goal for lighting the structure was to create a refined solution that would highlight key features while activating the courthouse’s identity at night.

KLH developed a thoughtful architectural lighting design program that incorporated dynamic white LED luminaires to enhance the clock tower façade. A key challenge was the variation in materials between the structures. The clock tower, recently re-clad in copper, will evolve through its patina over time, making it critical for the color temperature to remain adaptable for how the finish may appear years into the future. In contrast, the courthouse, constructed in 1885 from local sandstone, presents a distinctly different color and texture. These differences required a cohesive design approach to achieve a unified nighttime appearance. A custom lighting control system provides scheduling and dimming capabilities, allowing the tower to respond to changing conditions while maintaining visual consistency.

The result is a timeless lighting solution that elevates the courthouse’s presence and enriches the downtown experience.
